Essar – Stanlow Refinery
This week’s feature takes us back to an epic energy project, completed in 2013. Part of £25 million worth of refurbishments for oil and natural gas conglomerate Essar, the works captured included the replacement of a 450-tonne Regenerator Head at their Stanlow Refinery in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.
With highly skilled professionals mobilised as part of this incredibly complex manoeuvre, our own technical director Andy Piekarczyk had to match their level of precision over the course of several days to provide a detailed documentation of this elaborate process.
Engineering works such as these only occur about once every 25 years, hence Essar’s desire for us to create a full time-lapse video. The replacement was enabled by one of the world’s only cranes of its size, rising to approximately 40-storeys high, with a boom of 334ft. Other specialised equipment used on site included self-propelled modular trailers and a huge skid system (containing elements that were used to recover the nuclear submarine K147 Kursk from the Barents Sea!)
The grand scale of this project, dealing with some of the most heavy-duty engineering equipment in the world, made for some incredibly challenging circumstances, requiring our team to work closely with the Essar professionals to understand the details of the job at every phase of the project.
The resulting time-lapse edit is a credit to this successful working relationship and the efforts of everyone involved.
