Blink and you’ll miss it – 2016 is over and a new year is just beginning. Whether you celebrated with a firework display or simply sitting at home watching the TV, we hope you enjoyed bringing in 2017.
To mark the beginning of a new year we have rounded up a selection of NY-themed time-lapse videos just to ease you back into the first working week of 2017.
Reveillon Copacabana 24h time lapse
The use of noise and fire to celebrate a new year originated in ancient times, as this was thought to be effective in dispelling evil spirits and bring good luck. As fireworks combine both these elements, it is no surprise that it is now traditional to see fireworks on the 31 December each year.
By the look of this time-lapse by Pedro Peracio Rio’s Copacabana Beach is where it’s at on New Year’s Eve.
Capturing the happenings on the shorefront over a course of a 24-hour period, the time-lapse offers multiple angles showing the throngs of people coming together to enjoy a staged concert and firework display.
From this spectacular display, captured in 2011, it is not surprising that the Brazilians went on to wow the world with their Olympic celebrations last year.
It’s also a nice touch that the video ends with the extensive clean-up operation needed to restore the beach to its natural beauty following thousands of visitors.
Last light of 2016 – New Year’s Eve twilight time lapse at Newgrange
From impressive artificial light displays to the wonders of natural light patterns now.
This stunning time-lapse sequence shows the last light of 2016 as the sun sinks below the horizon at Newgrange, County Meath in Ireland.
Nestled in the Boyne Valley, north of the river, the vivid colour changes over the Newgrange monument shows a peaceful passing of time – very rare for a New Year’s Eve!
2010 Sydney New Year’s Eve Time Lapse
Perhaps one of the most spectacular settings for a firework display is Sydney, overlooking the harbour and its famous Sydney Harbour Bridge.
This stunning time-lapse sequence shows the fireworks light up the sky over other famous landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House, before the stillness of the harbour’s water into the early hours of New Year’s Day.
San Diego-Las Vegas 2015 New Years Eve Timelapse
Another unique take on the passage of time between New Year’s Eve and the first day of the New Year.
Although this sequence is quite long (running at nearly 10 minutes in fact!) there are some staggering lighting patterns from the sunrise over Eastern California’s Death Valley.
Despite its length, the consistent stillness of the framing in this sequence means that this video has quite an immersive viewing quality, offering another unique take on the turn of the year.
New Year’s Eve Dinner Party
Of course, there’s no harm in bringing in the New Year with your friends and family in the comfort of your home.
This time-lapse video by the Hirsches, shows the preparations for their New Year’s Eve dinner party, including everything from chopping veg to setting the table in anticipation of their guests.
Although only simple in its subject matter and execution, the subtle changes in camera angles as the party moves between different rooms of the house makes this a charming record of those special times spent with family and friends over the holidays.
