News Hair Growth Time-Lapse

5 September 2024 Holly Eckersley

The process of hair growth unfolds over time, following a specific biological cycle influenced by genetics, age, health, and lifestyle. While this process can be studied through scientific observation, one of the most compelling ways to document hair growth is through time-lapse photography. This technique allows us to visually capture the gradual changes in hair length and density over days, weeks, or even years, providing a dynamic and detailed view of the hair growth process. This method makes it possible to observe the subtle changes that occur in the hair growth cycle, which might be otherwise imperceptible to the naked eye. By condensing weeks or months of hair growth into a few seconds or minutes of footage, time-lapse photography offers a powerful tool for understanding how hair grows and changes over time.

Hair growth follows a cycle composed of three main phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen. Each phase plays a distinct role in the development of hair, and time-lapse photography can vividly capture the transition between these stages. The anagen phase is the active growth phase, during which hair follicles produce new cells, leading to the elongation of the hair shaft. Depending on the individual, this phase can last from two to six years, and hair typically grows about one centimetre per month during this time. Time-lapse footage of this phase can show the steady, linear growth of hair as it extends outward from the scalp.

The catagen phase, a brief transitional stage lasting about two to three weeks, is marked by the cessation of active hair growth and the beginning of the follicle’s shrinkage. Time-lapse photography can document this phase by showing a noticeable slowdown in hair growth, as the hair follicle detaches from its blood supply and prepares to enter the resting phase.

The final stage, the telogen phase, is the resting phase of the hair growth cycle. This phase, lasting around three months, is when hair growth halts completely, and the hair eventually sheds. Time-lapse images can capture the moment when the hair finally falls out, followed by the regrowth of new hair as the follicle re-enters the anagen phase. This visual documentation is particularly useful for tracking the overall density and coverage of hair on the scalp, as it shows how new hair replaces old strands.

Time-lapse photography is not only valuable for visualising the stages of hair growth but also for highlighting how various factors influence this process over time. For example, individuals undergoing treatment for hair loss can use time-lapse photography to monitor the effectiveness of therapies, such as medications or hair transplants. By comparing footage taken at different stages of treatment, it is possible to see whether the intervention has resulted in increased hair growth or density.

Time-lapse photography can provide insights into how health, nutrition, and stress levels impact hair growth. Chronic stress, for instance, can trigger a condition known as telogen effluvium, where a disproportionate number of hairs enter the telogen phase and shed prematurely. Time-lapse footage can reveal this sudden increase in hair shedding, offering a clear visual representation of how stress affects the hair growth cycle.

While the average person’s hair grows at a rate of about 1.25 centimetres per month, individual growth rates can vary. Some people may have a longer anagen phase, allowing them to grow their hair much longer before it transitions into the resting phase. Time-lapse photography can showcase these differences, making it easier to understand how personal factors like genetics and age contribute to variations in hair growth. We now turn to YouTube to see how time-lapse enthusiasts have documented hair growth in different ways.
