News Time-Lapse Systems: Supporting Our Local Community: Young Entrepreneur Award

9 July 2024 Holly Eckersley

At Time-Lapse Systems we always try to support community projects in any way that we can. In the past we have sponsored a local football team and filmed and sponsored a charity fun run. This year we were approached by St Peter’s First School in Alton to sponsor their ‘Entrepreneur of the Year Award’. The staff wanted to celebrate the wide-ranging talents of the children and to encourage their entrepreneurial skills. Each child is celebrated at this school for their individuality and the staff at St Peter’s always want to give the children as many creative outlets as possible. Each child was tasked with setting up their own business and donating the proceeds to their new school playground fundraising drive.

Many children took part in this competition and there was a wide range of businesses that they set-up and managed in their free time, such as plant stalls, cake stalls, ice-cream stands at the school gate, friendship bracelet stalls as-well as car boot sales, pet portraits, lucky horse shoe stalls and a UEFA European Championships magazine. We were all so impressed with how the children grasped concepts such as costs and profit and some children even ploughed the money they raised into new business ventures where they hoped to increase their turnover.

It was very difficult to choose the winners of the competition as each child that had participated had worked so incredibly hard on their businesses. The competition winner Ellie and runner-ups Idris and Louisa had turned over an incredible profit and displayed their enterprising skills by re-investing their money. Ellie wanted to encourage other students to recycle and used surplus horse shoes from her Father’s farrier business to create individually decorated lucky horse shoes which she sold at a number of car boot sales along with old toys and clothes she had outgrown. We loved the eco-credentials of her business and the positive impact she wanted to make.

Louisa manufactured her own organic dog biscuits and dog bandanas and even managed to become a stockist at a local dog groomers. Her packaging and branding were excellent and we loved her ingenuity. Whereas, Idris wanted to capitalise on students’ interest in the current UEFA European Championships and created a fun magazine to entertain and inform his peers about the Euros. His articles were beautifully written and we loved how his passion for football shone though in his business.

The school office manager Mrs Jade Power-Vaughn stated ‘Thank you so much Time-Lapse Systems for sponsoring such a great award. The children were all so excited to participate and it was wonderful to see them all grow in confidence as they learnt new skills‘. We had three special trophies made for the winner and two runner-ups of the competition, and each one received some exciting prizes. We also gave each child who participated in the initiative a medal and a book token to congratulate them on their hard work. We were delighted with the number of enterprising entrepreneurs who put their own skill sets to good use to generate vital funds for this rural village school. In total the students managed to raise nearly £600 for the PTA which will benefit each and every child at the school.

We hope that the children had fun taking part in the competition, we were very proud of each and every one of them. We were truly inspired by them all.
