News Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree! #NationalChristmasTreeDay

8 December 2016 Daniel Curtis

‘Tis the season when your living room floor is covered in pine needles, you must constantly drag your cat away from your precious antique baubles and a ‘responsible’ person constantly moans about the electricity bill due to the excessive amount of fairy lights.

As today is #NationalChristmasTreeDay, we have picked out some Christmas tree time-lapses to help take the edge off what can be quite a stressful period. Grab a mince pie and enjoy these festive videos!

Our cat, our Xmas tree, & time-lapse

“When the cat’s away the mouse will play.” But in this case, it’s when the owner’s away the cat will play!

This charming time-lapse video follows the antics of Andy the cat, who waits until his owners have left the house before showing the Christmas tree who the man of the house really is. The time-lapse technique works particularly well when Andy climbs up into the branches of the tree, as the quick shots slow down his mischievous movements!

Time-lapse: Rockefeller tree transformed

New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza attracts an endless number of New Yorkers, tourists and sightseers all year-round. It is at Christmas time, however, that this iconic location truly comes to life.

Situated in Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan, the ‘Rockefeller Christmas Tree’ attracts around 125 million people each holiday season. A national tradition every year since 1933, the Norway spruce usually stands between a staggering 69 and 100 feet tall.

The star that sits at the top of the tree is made up of 25,000 Swarovski crystals, 1 million facets and LED lights, and weighs 550 pound. But imagine that electricity bill!

Covent Garden Christmas tree 2016 Time lapse

From one iconic location to another now, albeit a little closer to home.

Perhaps not as big as the tree in Rockefeller Center, Covent Garden’s display in central London still requires hours of set-up and crane assistance to get it in place. Sitting on Covent Garden’s cobbled piazza amidst its pretty market buildings creates a quaint Christmassy feel in the heart of the UK’s capital.

LEGO Time-Lapse: Melbourne Builds a LEGO Christmas!

Christmas down under so, of course, there’s an absence of snow. But as this time-lapse by Lego proves, the festive period can be magical in all corners of the globe.

Having worked extensively with Lego and Merlin Entertainments to capture several of their builds (NB: we were not involved in this one), so it comes as no surprise that even for such mini materials, they do not scrimp on scale! Time-lapse is perfect for capturing the intricacies involved in the Lego-building process.

Timelapse of 3D printed Christmas tree cookie cutters

And something a bit different to end with. The art of 3D printing is truly a marvel of modern-day technology.

This short-term time-lapse sequence speeds up the process of a 3D printer as it works its magic to whip up a couple of cookie cutters in a matter of seconds. If only actually baking the cookies could be done in such as short a time…

Look out for more festive-themed blogs in the coming weeks!
