News Our Time-Lapse for Legoland Boston Hits the USA
Time-lapse photography stands as a powerful tool to capture intricate processes over extended periods. Our recent project, documenting the construction of a LEGO model of Boston’s Fenway Park Stadium, serves as a testament to this art form’s potential. This endeavour not only showcased the meticulous craftsmanship of the LEGO model builders but also highlighted the effectiveness of time-lapse photography in engaging a wide audience.
Project Overview
Commissioned by Merlin Entertainments for the LEGOLAND Discovery Center (LDC) in Boston, Massachusetts, the project involved creating a detailed LEGO® replica of Fenway Park Stadium, an iconic symbol of Boston’s rich sports heritage. This initiative marked our 12th collaboration with LEGOLAND and our 30th project with Merlin Entertainments, underscoring a longstanding partnership built on trust and mutual commitment to excellence.
Time-Lapse Setup and Execution
The construction took place at the LEGOLAND Model Builders’ Studio in Windsor, UK. To capture the entire process, we deployed one of our ultra-high-definition time-lapse camera systems on March 1, 2013. Positioned strategically within the studio, the camera was set to document the model’s assembly over several weeks, capturing each step of the builders’ meticulous work.
Given the project’s duration, we employed specialised techniques to ensure consistent image quality. Our remote camera system allowed for real-time adjustments to settings such as exposure and focus, accommodating varying lighting conditions and the builders’ schedules. This flexibility was crucial in maintaining the visual integrity of the time-lapse sequence.
Post-Production Process
Upon completion of the construction, the captured footage underwent a comprehensive post-production process. Our team meticulously edited the images, ensuring smooth transitions and accurate representation of the model’s assembly. The final time-lapse video not only showcased the builders’ craftsmanship but also provided viewers with an engaging visual narrative of the project’s progression.
Public Reception and Media Coverage
The time-lapse video garnered significant attention across the United States. Within days of its release, it was featured by prominent media outlets such as USA Today and aired on numerous television stations, including WBTV and Fox. The video also amassed over 100,000 views on YouTube shortly after its launch, reflecting widespread public interest.
This extensive exposure not only highlighted the intricate process of constructing the LEGO Fenway Park model but also served as a promotional asset for the opening of the new LEGOLAND® Discovery Center in Boston. The time-lapse video effectively engaged potential visitors, offering a glimpse into the attraction’s unique offerings.
Significance of Time-Lapse Photography in Model Construction
Time-lapse photography offers a unique perspective on projects that unfold over extended periods. In the context of model construction, it serves several key purposes:
-
Documentation: Time-lapse sequences provide a comprehensive record of the construction process, capturing each phase from inception to completion. This documentation is valuable for archival purposes and can serve as a reference for future projects.
-
Engagement: By condensing lengthy processes into concise videos, time-lapse photography creates engaging content that appeals to a broad audience. Viewers gain insight into the intricacies of model building, fostering appreciation for the craftsmanship involved.
-
Promotion: For attractions like LEGOLAND, time-lapse videos serve as effective marketing tools. They generate interest and excitement among potential visitors, showcasing the unique experiences the attraction offers.

Our Collaboration with Merlin Entertainments
Our partnership with Merlin Entertainments has encompassed over 30 projects, including 12 for LEGOLAND. Each project has presented unique challenges and opportunities, from capturing the construction of Toronto’s CN Tower and Tokyo’s SkyTree to Dallas’s Cowboys’ Stadium in LEGO form.
These collaborations have allowed us to refine our time-lapse techniques, tailoring our approach to meet the specific requirements of each model. Our commitment to quality and adaptability has been instrumental in successfully documenting these intricate projects.
The success of the Fenway Park time-lapse project reinforces the value of time-lapse photography in documenting and promoting large-scale model constructions. We look forward to future collaborations with Merlin Entertainments and other clients, aiming to continue delivering high-quality visual narratives that captivate and inform audiences.
