News The Time-Lapse of Landscape Design

Landscape design or landscape architecture is the creation of an outdoor space where the features of the area are artfully modified or freshly constructed; often with the user’s tastes and needs in mind. The design, planning and creation of such a space is often done to create an enjoyable and inspiring environment.  The origins of landscape architecture can probably be traced back 5,000 years to pre-historic times, where there is evidence of the landscape being artificially modified to create either a more pleasing or a more functional environment. The best examples in more modern history come from the spaces that were created around grand palaces in Europe, such as The Palace of Versailles.

In contemporary times the careful and artful design and build of outdoor spaces finds expression in many places. Spaces can be designed for personal use in private gardens, in municipal areas, or as part of tourist destinations. If the aim is to encourage visitors, a well-designed and properly maintained landscape can often be an allure as an attraction. Such spaces can also have ecological advantages by facilitating bio-diversity through the careful selection and planting of various species of trees, plants and flowers in adjunct to water, buildings and other structures.

The time-lapse of landscape design projects articulates the journey of creation as these beautiful spaces take shape. There are some great examples out there.

A small waterfall flows into an ornamental pond. Bright pink azalea bushes and large ornamental stones create a border around the grass banks leading to the pond. The Time-Lapse of Landscape Design.

YouTube user How We Landscape uses time-lapse to show the complete transformation of a small garden into a stunning space which has a patio and dining area and pretty borders full of colour and texture. The full evolution of the outdoor space into a beautiful and functional garden is remarkable.

Another time-lapse video by How We Landscape shows how even relatively small spaces can benefit from landscape design. A small cottage garden lawn is given a new lease of life through the use of sandstone, sleepers and fencing. Small raised beds allow the users to easily grow their own flowers, vegetables and fruits, whilst a small laurel hedge offers privacy. This shows how the functionality of landscape design is often just as important as the aesthetic effects. This project makes full use of the space through a sympathetic and practical design.

Verteck Gardens shows the full time-lapse of an intricate landscape gardening project. This private garden went through a full transformation using a number of gravel topped borders, patio dining areas and a newly laid lawn which sweeps around the house ensuring that the space is low maintenance. Created by professional landscape gardeners, this project shows how any space can be easily modified into a useable and beautiful area for relaxation. The use of time-lapse makes clear how this garden was vastly improved and made into a beautiful family friendly space.

This time-lapse video charts the evolution of a feature-less new build garden makeover. The small patio and weed-riddled lawn are transformed into a range of seating areas with beautiful, eye-catching borders with ornamental stones, trellising and a chrome water feature. The stunning results of this newly landscape designed garden shows how even the smallest spaces can be completely revitalised.

At Time-Lapse Systems we work across many different sectors capturing a wonderful variety of projects all over the UK. We have captured many landscape design projects including the RHS Flower Show for a number of years. Over 2 consecutive tears we captured various projects at the RHS Flower Show at Chatsworth House, in Derbyshire. In 2018 we captured the construction of a stunning outdoor display which featured island borders full of textures and colour.  We thoroughly enjoyed capturing this prestigious event which represents the pinnacle of horticultural excellence.

We have worked on many more landscape projects too, capturing the transformations of private gardens, and urban spaces. We always relish this sort of work as it provides the opportunity to capture nature as well as artificial structure. Capturing nature is challenging. Equipment choice is vital, as is the necessity to continually adjust the camera settings on our DSLRs through our remote networks in order to adjust for the changes in light, seasons, the variable visible progress etc; all enabling us to capture optimally and bring each project to life in the best way possible.
