News Time-Lapse at Tesco
We have recently completed a time-lapse capture project for a Tesco store car park, working in partnership with Tesco and their consultants, Transport Planning Associates (TPA). The aim of the project was to monitor traffic flow and assess how the car park is utilised by customers throughout the day. The data and footage gathered will assist Tesco and TPA in evaluating the efficiency of the car park’s layout and identifying potential areas for improvement.
Our time-lapse cameras were installed in a position that provided a clear and comprehensive view of the car park. This strategic placement ensured that the footage would capture all key movements, including vehicle entry and exit points, parking patterns, and pedestrian activity. Our team carefully planned the system’s setup to guarantee uninterrupted operation, even during busy periods or adverse weather conditions.
Over the course of the project, our high-definition time-lapse cameras recorded continuous footage of the car park. This allowed Tesco and TPA to review detailed visual data on how the space was used at different times of the day and on different days of the week. The footage highlighted patterns in customer behaviour, such as peak traffic periods, commonly used parking areas, and pedestrian flow between vehicles and the store entrance.
The project also enabled the consultants to identify specific behaviours that could impact traffic flow or safety. For example, the time-lapse footage provided insights into vehicle queuing at entrances, potential bottlenecks within the car park, and how effectively the design accommodates both vehicles and pedestrians. This level of detail is critical for making informed decisions about potential adjustments to layout, signage, or traffic management measures.
Our system’s ability to capture long-term footage without interruptions was key to the success of the project. The cameras were monitored throughout the capture period to ensure consistent performance, and the data collected was securely stored for analysis. This reliability ensured that Tesco and TPA had access to a complete visual record of car park activity, with no gaps or inconsistencies in the data.
At the end of the project, the time-lapse footage was processed and reviewed to produce a final deliverable that met the needs of the consultants. The compiled footage provided an accurate and efficient way to analyse the car park’s operation, offering a time-efficient alternative to traditional observation methods. It also created a valuable resource for ongoing analysis, enabling Tesco and TPA to revisit the footage as needed to support future planning and decision-making.

This project demonstrates the effectiveness of time-lapse technology in monitoring and evaluating high-traffic environments. By providing a clear and detailed visual record of activity over an extended period, the footage captured by our system supports data-driven decision-making. Tesco and TPA now have a valuable tool to help them improve the functionality and safety of the car park, ensuring it meets the needs of customers while maximising efficiency.
We are pleased to have contributed to this project and look forward to supporting similar initiatives in the future, using time-lapse technology to deliver practical insights and solutions for our clients.
