News Time-lapse video reveals new roof at No. 1 Court, Wimbledon

31 January 2020 Kate

FOLLOWING its debut at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships, No. 1 Court’s complex installation is brought to life in our specially commissioned time-lapse video.

Working with main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine, in association with Groundbreak Productions, we have produced a three-minute time-lapse documenting this incredible journey from start to finish.

Every aspect of managing our time-lapse camera systems throughout had to be thought through carefully, and required regular liaison with all parties to ensure that, upon completion, the edit fully reflected the monumental feat achieved.

Digital moves were implemented to highlight the subtleties in crane lifts and particular activities of personnel on the ground, also seamlessly switching between multiple camera angles to communicate the sheer size and scale of this project.

These techniques combined helped to convey a complete picture of the works at Wimbledon.

All of this was made possible by the diligent approach of our entire team, who exercised meticulous attention to detail at every stage of the project.

This began even before arriving on site, with our experienced engineers identifying optimum positions for each of the multiple camera systems we utilised on No.1 Court, as well as later carrying out strategic moves to capture works as they progressed in different areas.

Our remote monitoring capabilities also assisted with this, with adjusting capturing rates and all camera settings a necessity to ensure best results.

This consistent, high-quality capture is what we are known for, reaffirming our status as the leading provider of time-lapse solutions on the UK’s biggest and most prestigious construction projects.

Historic developments at the All England Club

The official unveiling of Wimbledon’s brand-new roof over No.1 Court took place in mid-May 2019, ushering in the 133rd Championships.

As one of the most complex and challenging technical feats to be delivered at Wimbledon in its 142-year history, play on the second-biggest tennis court will never again be disrupted by unfavourable weather conditions.

These key works come 10 years after Centre Court was fitted with its now-iconic retractable roofing system.

The fully post-produced edit we showcase here is only one element of the dedicated service we provided across the full duration of the No.1 Court project.

Our camera systems were there to document these prestigious developments from the very beginning – capturing almost 100,000 highest quality images in seven months.

The full time-lapse archive was made available to our clients via our iRis 4.0 viewing portal, which helped to maximise the platform for this historic project, as Wimbledon regularly shared images on their website, to the press and on social media.

Iconic improvements that have been £70m in the making, we are proud to have been part of these developments in South West London and look forward to witnessing the results for years to come.
